Polyphony “alla Bolognese”

Polyphonic and polychoral music from Bolognese sources

From September 10 to 17 of 2023, LAMP will present a very special Academy in Bologna, Italy. In this academy, to take place in beautiful historic spaces in the center of Bologna as well as in several churches with historical Renaissance organs (including San Petronio in Bologna and Santa Barbara in Mantova) we will explore the polyphonic repertoire preserved in Bolognese sources at the Museo della Musica and in other Bolognese collections. In a series of workshops and ensemble sessions we will examine the way in which voices and instruments combined in the performance of this repertoire and get practical experience with some of the most beautiful surviving Renaissance Italian organs. We will also work directly with orginal manuscripts and prints housed in Bologna. There will be a final public concert in Santa Barbara (Mantova) on September 17. The faculty for this academy will be:

Tore Denys - voice
Bruce Dickey - cornetto
Catherine Motuz - trombone
Catalina Vicens - keyboards

This academy is open to a limited number of singers and players of cornetto, violin (viola da braccio), trombone (sackbut), and organ. Participants should be young professionals or advanced students and will be accepted by audition only.

I would like to dedicate this Academy to Liuwe Tamminga, who left us this year, but whose knowledge and practical experience with this music and these instruments was unparalleled. In the photo he is seen playing his beloved Lorenzo da Prato organ (1471-75) in the basilica of San Petronio in Bologna.
